Why a Child Life Specialist?

Abby Horton

Hello, I'm Abby!

I have worked with children in the hospital setting for 12 years. As a Child Life Specialist I have supported children of adult patients, burn survivors, children with oncology diagnoses, patients who need extended rehabilitation stays, children who have had needed pediatric intensive care, general inpatient pediatrics, surgical settings, and critical cardiac care. My experience spans over several children's hospitals throughout the country. I understand just how overwhelming the day after the discharge from the hospital can feel and have the tools and experience to help you and your child take the bridge back into life outside of the hospital.

Client and Peer Testimonials

Working alongside Abby has been one of the great privileges of my career. Her skill, compassion, and unwavering presence make her an extraordinary child life specialist, especially in the world of pediatric burn care.

In the acute setting, Abby brings calm to chaos. She meets children and families in some of the scariest and most painful moments of their lives and somehow makes space for comfort, play, and trust. Her ability to translate complex medical procedures into age-appropriate, understandable language empowers young patients and reduces fear.

In the outpatient setting, Abby is a steady presence through the long road of healing. She builds meaningful relationships over time, helping children stay engaged in their care, cope with ongoing procedures, and reclaim joy in their daily lives.

At family burn camp, Abby shines even brighter. She has an unmatched gift for helping children feel seen, capable, and connected—not just to their peers, but to themselves. Her creativity, warmth, and deep understanding of trauma and resilience make camp a place of true transformation.

Abby brings heart and expertise to every setting she’s in. She was an essential part of our burn team and a true advocate for the healing of every child and family she touches.
